Match Report: Obi Emmanuel The Goalscorer As Edel FC Out-smarts Smart City FC To Finish On 3rd Position

Edel FC Awka shrugged off the challenge of Smart City FC of Lagos to earn the bragging rights of the playoffs runner up. In what was a feisty encounter between 3rd placed team and 4th on the log. A 70th minute goal by wing wizard Obi Emmanuel did the damage as the Galloping Zebras had their highest finish on the log in any season.

Coach Willie Udube made two changes in the starting 11 as Sodiq Olanrewaju and Emmanuel Garuba came in for Godday Ekoto and Nwaorisa Onyebuchi. Garuba almost opened the scoring as his long range, trademark free kick narrowly missed the target. Again the same Garuba would have scored as he benefited from a loose ball and drove into the 18 and shot narrowly wide. That was how it ended in the first half.

The second half began with Edel FC on the ascendancy. The Awka based side controlled possession but couldn’t make any in roads until the 70th minute when Emmanuel Garuba controlled a pass from midfield and skipped past two Smart City defenders to shoot, his goal bound shot was parried by opposition goalkeeper but Obi Emmanuel was on hand to score the rebound from almost impossible angle. Obi had a chance to double our lead but his curling effort from inside the box was just whiskers away from connecting.

That was how it ended. 3 points secured. 8 consecutive home wins for Edel FC ending the season on 37 points just 3 points behind 2nd placed Beyond Limits. Up next for Edel FC is a round of 32 matchup against EFCC of Abuja in Ilorin on Wednesday May 22nd 2024.
